Losing teams don't have to define winning players - Greenville News

Fri, Feb 24, 2012
Seahawks? The 2-14 record tells you what you need to know. The offense featured three quarterbacks who all spent time giving it their best shot – Kelly Stouffer, Dan McGwire and Stan Gelbaugh. The remarkable thing about that team was the atmosphere of determination that infused the defense and ran throughout the squad. The reason for that was the presence of third-year defensive tackle Cortez Kennedy who was recently named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and will be enshrined in the Hall in August. (Page 2 of 2) Kennedy had a career that would rival any player at his position in the history of the game. If they were taking nominations for the Mount Rushmore of defensive tackles, the list could begin and end with Pittsburgh’s Mean Joe Greene, Randy White and Bob Lilly of the Dallas Cowboys and Cortez Kennedy. Nobody would object. The neon season that embellished his career was in ’92 when Kennedy was named the NFL’s defensive player of the year. Consider today how good a player would have to be on, say, the 2-14 Indianapolis Colts, to be given such an honor. It was an obvious choice because in that awful season when they knew they were playing with a roster that didn’t match up with any of their opponents, Kennedy led the NFL with 14 sacks as a defensive tackle. More impressive perhaps was that he also had 14 tackles for losses, or a combined 28 sacks and tackles for loss, a staggering, almost unbelievable total. Off to his left, Bryant was able to make 4.5 sacks and the Seahawks incredibly kept games close week after week. I can vividly remember a conversation with Kennedy in which he said, “I will never quit, my teammates will never quit. You do that because you respect yourself and you respect the game and if you can do those things you will gain respect for yourself (from others).” It was largely unreported, there was never a top-of-the-news story on ESPN about how hard they played in yet another loss, but they di...
