Actress Andie MacDowell lends her celebrity to ovarian cancer cause - Greenville News

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
Foundation (SCOCF), she has become the face of the local organization as well. But what continues to fuel MacDowell’s involvement day to day is the people behind the disease. “When I met the women in Greenville, it was really the relationships I had with these women that really impacted me,” MacDowell says of getting involved on a local level. “Interacting with them has taught me so much about just living for other people and making an effort to help other people.” She visited Greenville recently to tape two public service announcements for the SCOCF, and to meet with local ovarian cancer survivors, some of whom have become her friends. Even as last-minute changes to her schedule meant MacDowell would be flying out of the country in two days, and caused her to cancel meetings with the press, she insisted on time with the women who she says inspire her. One is Tori Looper. The 23-year-old, who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2009 at the age of 21, first met MacDowell at an annual Handbags for Hope fundraiser for SCOCF, of which the actress is honorary spokeswoman. The young cancer survivor was still going through chemotherapy. “I think I stuck out in her...

And it was a close game that Hickory won 4-3. With 3,689 fans looking on at Fluor Field, Andrew Miller made another rehab appearance, starting the game for the Drive. Previous generation paved way for family - Greenville News

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
Lawrence Ashmore started a grading company in Greenville in 1929. His grandson, Russell Carlton Ashmore Jr., was born in the same year. The infant grading endeavor was among the many small companies that failed to survive the Great Depression, but the hard economic times hardly dented the family’s diligent, enterprising spirit. By 1930, Ashmore Brothers Inc. — Lawrence and sons Russell Sr. and Mack — was up and rolling, creating driveways and...

Recovery continues to build in Upstate - Greenville News

Sun, Apr 22, 2012
Michael Dey views the 63 percent year-to-date increase in Greenville County residential building permits as Economics 101 — supply and demand. “There’s an insufficient amount of existing homes on the market to meet current demand so new homes are being put on the market to meet that new demand,” said Dey, executive vice president of the Home Builders Association of Greenville. “As demand continues to go up, which we expect it will, the amount of activity...
