GSP pushing for cargo traffic as well as passenger traffic - Greenville News

Sun, Jan 22, 2012
Garner said. The equipment was needed to allow GSP to compete with airports, including those in Atlanta, Charlotte and Huntsville, Ala., which were gaining Upstate air cargo business. “That didn’t bode well for us,” he said, adding the Aviation Services Group initially began in 2001 and was re-organized in 2011. “We’re not taking businesses away from FedEx or UPS,” Garner said, adding that the airport and the dedicated freight handlers are partners in the cargo business. “This is new freight. We are taking it away from Atlanta, Charlotte, Huntsville.” Cargo tonnage jumped appreciably in 2011, he said, with more than 250 operations during the year. The next most active year was 2007, with slightly less than 100 operations during the year. Garner attributed the jump to an improving economic recover, the arrival of Southwest Airlines into the Upstate market and the airport’s move to enhance its cargo handling capabilities. The airport can handle just about any cargo plane that would fly in with a 1,001-foot-long runway. The runway was extended at the behest of BMW Group when the company announced its South Carolina plant in 1992. (Page 2 of 2) World air cargo is expected to grow between 5 percent and 6 percent a year over the next 20 years, he told the GSP commissioners. And the outlook for GSP is favorable. The airport is in the midst of a manufactu...

Warriors' Hince is truck stop treasure - Greenville News

Wed, Jan 11, 2012
He came in and made some real nice plays for us.” Hince said he was with the Ice Bears in Huntsville, Ala., when Knoxville coach Mike Craigen told him Greenville “wants you to play a couple of games this weekend.” “I said, ‘Yeah, if I get a chance to play at the next level for sure I want to go,’ ” said Hince, in his third pro season. “I’d already turned down a couple of emergency backup roles, which I’m not too fond of. To get a chance to play for Greenville was great, and I accepted right away.” (Page 2 of 2) Many of his new teammates were asleep when the Kapuskasing, Ontario, native got on the Road Warriors’ bus. “We stopped at a Cracker Barrel somewhere in Lexington (Ky.) -- I’m not too sure. We woke up, we were eating breakfast and I met a couple of guys who were sitting with me at the table. “Everybody’s kind of saying, ‘Who’s this new guy?’ ” “Some guys were talking how we had picked up a guy on the bus trip at night and they were having breakfast with him,” said Brandon Wong, a Road Warriors forward. “I hadn’t even seen him yet. I met him that next morning. “He’s stepped in and he’s working hard,” Wong said. “He’s focused and he’s shown that he wants to be here. Hats off to him; he’s playing well right now.” Hince said he didn’t receive much personalized attention from Stork prior to his ECHL debut. “Actually he just kind of threw me in there,” Hince said. “He just did his regular video like he does prior to games -- working on systems and what-not. I just jumped on the pregame skate and the next thing I was playing in the game.” Hince stopped 22 of 24 shots as the Road Warriors beat Chicago in overtime, 3-2, on Dec. 31. He followed that with 27 saves in a 4-1 victory at Toledo on Saturday. “It was pretty neat being in Chicago playing,” Hince said...
