Stephen Schlossberg, Official of U.A.W. and Labor Dept., Dies at 90

Thu, Dec 15, 2011
It’s not so revolutionary for someone with an entry into organized labor to be in the Labor Department, is it. It’s not like being a spy in the Pentagon.” Stephen Isaac Schlossberg was born in Roanoke, Va., on May 18, 1921. He graduated from high school there in 1938 and enrolled in the University of Virginia, but he left college to enlist in the Army Air Forces the day after the Pearl Harbor attack. “When it came to fighting Nazis and fascists, I stopped being a pacifist pretty quickly,” he said. After six years in the Army, he went to work in his family’s retail business. He quit after several years to take a job as an organizer in the South with the International Ladies’ Garment Workers Union, his pay dropping to $3,400 a year from $16,000. As an organizer, he was arrested 17 times and accused of disturbing the peace. The garment workers trusted him more than other organizers, Mr. Schlossberg said, because, as a Southern native, he “didn’t speak like a New Yorker with an Italian accent or Jewish inflection.” He said he was drawn to the union movement because of the many injustices he saw and sometimes experienced while growing up in Virginia. Mr. Schlossberg, whose father was a Jewish immigrant from Russia, told a biographer, “Jews, blacks, Catholics and foreigners were hated with a passion.” After four years as an organizer, he returned to the University of Virginia, obtaining his bachelor’s degree in 1955 and his law degree there in 1957. He took a job at a Washington labor law firm, Van Arkel & Kaiser. In 1961, he became a special assistant to the director of the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. In that role, he spent several months trying to prevent and then end the 114-day newspaper strike in New York that began in December 1962. He married Nancy Kamin in June 1963. During the newspaper strike, Labor Secretary Willard Wirtz often joked to the couple that their intense romance was preventing Mr. Schlossberg from settling the dispute. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Mark; a daughter, Karen J. Schlossberg; and three grandchildren. After leaving the U.A.W., Mr. Schlossberg became head of the Washington office of the International Labor Organization. He helped lift its reputation in the United States after many accused it of leaning too far left. He was most in the news when h... (New York Times)
