Crenshaw: Larry Striplin's proudest legacy is Bryant-Jordan Foundation - al.com

Fri, Feb 17, 2012
Striplin and Blankenship were longtime friends, dating back to when the Montgomery resident was a football coach in Striplin's native Selma. He remembers his friend as someone who was determined to succeed at those things in which he believed. And he believed in the positive influence of sports. "He strongly believed sports and athletics could play a critical part in, first of all, keeping kids in school, and the role they play in their communities and their families," Blankenship said. "He had a passion for it." More than one person has talked since last week about Striplin's commitment to a project. No power running back pressed more forcefully for the goal line than Striplin pushed to accomplish what he had begun. "He could have a vision or perception of something," Blankenship said. "He'd start on it and he didn't even listen to any "This won't work" kind of things. He just kept on pursing it." Striplin thought it was a faulty notion that superior athleticism and scholastic success couldn't exist in the same person. Bryant-Jordan was a tool in debunking that notion. "He wanted to do something to deal with that perception and also reward kids," Blankenship said. "The important thing in the beginning was not the money but the recognition that they stayed in school, they achieved and they were athletes too." Striplin's efforts allowed thousands of Alabama student-athletes the chance to reach for higher goals, to continue their athletic and academic careers in college. "He really is responsible for raising 90 percent of the money that was put into the foundation that made this work," Blankenship said. "He just spent many, many, many hours on it. He gave a lot of his personal money, by the way, too. It was easy for him to ask people for money because he'd given so much himself." A video can be...

In Paris he welcomed many world leaders to his cathedral, among them Presidents Ford, Reagan and Bush.
