Mexico Territory, in 1899. He grew up, however, in Cross Cut, in Brown County, Texas. His father was a bartender and rancher in Brown County. He was an eighth-generation grandson of John Rolfe and Pocahontas, and a second cousin to the later singing cowboy, Rex Allen. Strange was a musician. He played both fiddle and guitar and had a fine singing voice. He had a radio program - live, of course, at prime rural listening time, noon - in El Paso as early as 1929. He sang, played his guitar and fiddle, and did a short talk-show type routine. By 1930 he was with the Arizona Wranglers, a musical group in Hollywood. He sang and played fiddle and guitar.
