Eastern Indiana city plans to convert former auto supplier property ... - Greenfield Daily Reporter

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
About 1,000 jobs were lost when Dana closed its Richmond camshaft plant in 1987. Another 200 jobs were lost when it closed the foundry a decade ago. Tony Foster, the city's development director, said an obsolete testing facility on the property might be torn down, with efforts concentrating on the office building at the site near Interstate 70 in the city along the Indiana-Ohio state line. "That building provides a tremendous amount of space, room for light manufacturing in the basement and has a training room, a server room and flexible office space," Foster said. "That makes it perfect for a certified tech park type of building." The land is now owned by a group of local investors. Foster said the two sides haven't yet agreed on a price for the property. ___ Information from: Palladium-Item, Please enable JavaScript to view the comments powered by Disqus.

Credit ratings cut for 15 banks - El Paso Inc.

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
The risks of this industry became apparent in the financial crisis,” said Robert Young, a managing director at Moody’s. “These new ratings capture those risks.” Citigroup and Bank of America, which have struggled to fully recover from the financial crisis, were among the hardest hit. After the downgrades, the banks stand barely above the minimum for an investment grade rating, a level also known as junk and a sign of the difficult business conditions they face. Executives at the banks argued Thursday that the new ratings failed to reflect the safeguards and changes that they had put in place in recent years. The cuts come at a time o...

Council members push to place library backers' initiative on ... - San Jose Mercury News

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
We are encouraged by the request,'' said Peter Allen, the proponent's campaign director, in a statement. "We are confident that Mayor Reed, the Rules Committee, and the full council will agree that this is the most equitable path toward correcting an egregious mistake by council-appointed city officials and honoring the will of the 40,000 San Jose votes who signed our petition,'' he said. Allen also said that taking this step would "not equate'' to an endorsement of the proposal nor would it prevent city leaders from urging voters to oppose it at the ballot box. "It would, however, serve to repair the trust that has been broken between the city and its residents,'' said Allen in the statement. "We urge the council to do the right thing.'' The proponents said they had been told by City Clerk Dennis Hawkins that they needed to gather the signatures of 5 percent of the city's registered voters. As the group was on the verge of turning in 40,000 signatures -- twice the 19,161 it initially thou...

Business networking event hosted by Staten Island Economic ... -

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
The Vanderbilt at South Beach. And despite the not-so-friendly weather, 200 people turned out for a night to meet-and-greet with other local businessowners. SIEDC Executive Director Cesar Claro noted with the Staten Island Film Festival a thing of the past, the agency needed an interim business program to fill the void. “It’s simply about trying to get Staten Island businesses to spend more time networking with each other,” said Claro. And organizers made that an easy task, kicking off the night with a mixer featuring a deejay and highlighted by a super raffle with prizes totaling $25,000. That was followed by a speed networking event and finally by a networking event featuring entertainment by “American Idol” contestant Marissa Pontecorvo. Joseph Doolan of TD Bank, the program’s primary sponsor, said the idea is to create a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. AnneMarie Mannino and Aprillynne Cruz, both directors of community relations for Sunrise Towers Assisted Living Center, were more than happy to be on hand. Said Ms. Mannino: “It’s a great opportunity to get our name out there and meet people and let them know what Sunrise is all about.” ...

Birmingham Festival Theatre serves up another effective 'Last Hotel ... -

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Connor, who knew Dinah's mother well. As the Freedom Riders arrive, and one takes refuge in Dinah's hotel, tensions are coming to a head. Like the 1996 production, director Edward C. Miller's revival pulls no punches, and he's cast the show well from top to bottom. Amanda Maddox sets the tone right away as Dinah Fraley. You can see the tension on her face as the show opens, and her riveting performance is the production's moral compass. Likewise with David Seale's Pete. Pete wants to do the right thing, but he also knows the ramifications of doing that, and that tension is evident throughout the show. Their children, Gracie and Benny, are ably played by Erin McMahon and Douglas Coghlan. Marcus Emel and Alysa Rambo are quite effective as Nathan and Lydia Stamps. Nathan is Pete's co-worker, and after a rocky start, they bond on the baseball field and concoct an event that may be the end of Bull Connor, who seems to be losing his grip on reality. As reporter Sugarfoot and Freedom Rider Angel, Evan Miller and Sayo Orange are welcome additions to Lydia's hotel. DETAILS What: “The Last Hotel for Women” Where:Birmingham Festival Theatre; 933-2383 When: Through June 30 Bottom line: Review gets four out of five stars What this production doesn't have that 1996's did is Randy Marsh as Bull Connor, a very tough act to follow. Ma...

'Frog juice' drug found in horses - El Paso Inc.

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Louisiana, Oklahoma and New Mexico. Vince Mares, executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, said Tuesday that a California lab had found dermorphin in six postrace tests in New Mexico. Mares said the positive tests had not yet been confirmed. Its use is also suspected in Texas. Oklahoma officials declined to comment, as did racing regulators in Texas. Some of the results were first reported on, the website of The Times-Picayune in New Orleans. “This whole thing has really taken us by surprise,” said Charles A. Gardiner III, executive director of the Louisiana Racing Commission. “It couldn’t have come at a worse time. We’re fighting back federal intervention. We’re under attack and losing our fan base. Fans believe that the sport is dirty, that there is cheating. And here we have an obvious attempt to cheat.” In Louisiana, Gardiner said, 11 horses, both quarter horses and thoroughbreds, tested positive for dermorphin, though none of them broke down. He said two quarter horses in particular earned big purses. “A lot of money’s got to be given back,” he said, adding: “I’m sure that there are more positives across the country. It’s not unusual that something isn’t being detected.” Barker of the Louisiana State lab said 15 horses in Oklahoma had tested positive for dermorphin. Industrial Laboratories in suburban Denver was the first lab to successfully identify dermorphin in postrace testing. It was not easy. Petra Hartmann, director of direct testing services for the company, said clients relayed that the frog secretion was being used, and later some seized materials did turn out to be dermorphin. “We identified dermorphin,” Hartmann said. “We knew it was out there.” But, she said, the lab’s test could not identify the drug in horses after they raced. After racing regulators kept insisting that the substance was in use, “We went back to the drawing board,” Hartmann said. Industrial’s chief scientist subsequently developed a more sensitive test, specifically for this compound, she said. “There is no resting in this business,” she said. “You are...
