Artist faces wreckage of NY tall ship, carved from 23 tons of New ... - Greenfield Daily Reporter

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
South Street Seaport museum, Saturday, June 16, 2012 in New York. The sculpture was vandalized Friday night. (AP Photo/Mary Altaffer) NEW YORK — Artist Matthew Long spent days carving 23 tons of sand into a sculpture of a tall ship to display on New York City's waterfront. Then, in seconds, it suffered the fate of sand castles everywhere. Long, a 57-year-old sand sculptor, arrived at Manhattan's South Street Seaport on Saturday morning to find his creation partially demolished and covered in boot prints, "about a size nine." "There were footprints all over the sand, and I was cursing under my breath," he said. "It was devastating — such a hard, sinking feeling after days of carving in the hot sun." Laughing at his own cheesy humor, the Staten Island resident added, "It took the wind out of my sails." He said he'd worried about leaving his work sitting outside on a Friday night near the bars in the district, but hoped a guard patrolling the area would k...

Clark Aided Blacks on 'Bandstand'? Not Always - The Root

Sun, Apr 22, 2012

Clark was well aware that advertisers were eager to reach teenagers, and his show offered daily access to young consumers. "It's been a long, long time since a major network has aimed at the most entertainment-starved group in the country," Clark told Newsweek in 1957. "And why not? After all, teenagers have $9 billion a year to spend." ...

Magic Johnson still smiles in the face of HIV - The Independent

Thu, Mar 22, 2012
You didn't have to love basketball to love Earvin "Magic" Johnson. Yes, he was a great player – as good as Michael Jordan, in the view of many qualified to hold forth on such matters. But, above all, it was that smile; that huge, infectious and utterly disarming smile, melting the stoniest of hearts at the very first encounter.
