Chuck) Studley of Cincinnati, Ohio, and Mrs. Rita (Dick) Herwig of Albert Lea, Minn.; three sisters-in-law, Mary Stuart Jobst, Dorothy Schulz Jobst, both of Pontiac, and Nancy Husted Stenroos of Elk Grove, Calif.; and one brother-in-law, Jack Kane, of Palatine; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; a son who died at birth; three brothers, James, Donald “Mike”, and Joe; and one sister, Mary Gertrude Kane.John attended St. Mary’s School in Pontiac and Techny High School, Chicago. He graduated from Pontiac Township High School, class of 1938.John began as an enlisted man in the Pontiac National Guard, and he retired as a regular Army Lieutenant Colonel. In World War II he participated in the Battle of the Bulge. He was also one of the first U.S. soldiers to visit the infamous Dachau Prison Camp near Munich in 1945. John also saw action in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He received numerous medals and citations, including the Bronze Star with oak leaf cluster.John was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, the VFW, the Knights of Columbus and the Pontiac Elks Lodge.John loved golf and was known for his patience and fairway skill with low-numbered irons.In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to St. Mary’s School.This obituary may be viewed and private condolences left at www.martin-funeralhomes.com.
