Obituary for BRAMLETT

Sun, Nov 6, 2011
Mount Olive Baptist Church all of her life; there she taught Sunday School; sang in the church choir; served as the church clerk; and was the financial clerk for twenty-six years. She joined the Eureka Matrons and the Home Circle Club both in 1935, and she very much enjoyed being a member; she believes they have done many wonderful things over the years. She served as President of the club for a short time in the early 1940's, and served as the Assistant Secretary. In 1964, Zenobia Collins McMurray was President, and in 1967, Sis. By John Wilkens, Reporter - People Sunday, October 9, 2011 at 6 a.m. Amy Stewart has a thing for the natural world's creepy crawlers. Amy Stewart lives in Eureka and writes about the dark side of nature: wicked plants and now wicked bugs. Good thing she has a wicked sense of humor. She’ll be at Warwick’s Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. She answered questions recently by email. Why wicked bugs instead of helpful bugs? Well, this book is a sequel to “Wicked Plants,” and in both cases I was really interested in the dark side of the natural world — and how we huma...

Joseph R. Carmichael Jr., 96, Hero of U.S.S. Bunker Hill, Dies

Sun, Oct 2, 2011
Commander Carmichael’s Navy Cross citation says, he “upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.” Joseph Rix Carmichael Jr. was born on June 13, 1915, in Eureka, Utah, the eldest of five children of Joseph and Mary Silver Carmichael. His father was a gold miner. At the University of Washington, from which he graduated in 1939 with a degree in forestry, he joined the Navy Reserve Officers Training Corps. A year later, he was called to active duty, and in 1943 he was assigned to the Bunker Hill. After the war, Commander Carmichael bought a logging company in British Columbia. When it failed, he and his first wife, Sylvia, who died in 1986, moved to New York, where he became a real estate developer and, later, a banking executive. Besides his second wife, the former Jeanne Shank, he is survived by a sister, Jean Connoly; a brother, Douglas; two stepchildren, Linda Hamer and William Dunn; and two step-grandchildren. Mrs. Carmichael said her husband — a “small, wiry, very lively man” — had never understood why he had survived the attack when many of his men had not. As “Danger’s Hour” says: “To this day, Carmichael carries the scars from the soot, visible on X-rays, deep in his lungs. The other scars, those that come from leading men to their deaths, are harder to see.” ... (New York Times)
