Area man gunned down; trap range closes - Carmi Times

The second-oldest veteran in the State of Illinois was honored at Heritage Woods assisted living center in McLeansboro on the occasion of his 103rd birthday. The McLeansboro mayor presented Vernon Hollister with a key to the city and declared Jan. 5, 2011, as Vernon Hollister Day. Hollister was drafted at age 36 and fought across Europe as part of Patton's Third Army. Randall O. McMahon, 59, McLeansboro, was accused of murdering 24-year-old Adam L. Ritchey, also of McLeansboro, in early January. The charges alleged McMahon gunned down Ritchey in the 600 block of North Hickory Street in the Hamilton County seat. North Carolina. He volunteered as a reading assistant at Club Boulevard Elementary School in Durham and Rashkis Elementary School in Chapel Hill and the Haliwa-Saponi Tribal School in Hollister, N.C. He brought student volunteers from Duke University to teach at the Saponi school especially in computers and technology. He was instrumental in having a major utility company wire the school enabling more computers to be brought there. He was also a man of great spirit who founded Kol Haskalah, a congregation of Humanistic Judaism, in the greater Triangle area. He is survived by his wife, Gayla, to whom he was married just shy of 47 years. He is also survived by his two children, Beth Boyer and son-in-law, Brad; and grandchildren, Aliya, Josiah and Elias of Greenwich, and by Ari Halbrecht and daughter-in-law, Jill; and grandchildren, Maxwell and Samuel of Raleigh, N.C. Herb was a consummate philanthropist and contributions to a charity of your choice in his memory are welcome, his family said..
