Grand Prix founder was 97 - Long Beach Press-Telegram

Wed, Nov 16, 2011
Kensington had made its 1988 debut as many of Mirabile's peers were retreating to auto malls in Signal Hill and Cerritos. Mirabile, who learned his trade working at his father's car dealership in Huntington Park, came to Auto Row in 1955, when he and business partner Bob James opened Jamestown at 1350 Long Beach Blvd. The pair originally sold soon-to-be extinct Studebakers and DeSotos, but shortly branched out into the then-infant import car market. "I raced cars out in the desert when I was a kid," Mirabile told the Press-Telegram in 1999. "Bob and I decided the local market could use some excitement, so we started importing European sports cars." During their heyday in the 1970s, Mirabile and James sold MGs, Triumphs, Jaguars and Mini Coopers, Mercedes-Benzes and Volkswagens. At Kensington, Mirabile sold Italian Bugatti street racers and American-built Avanti convertibles. In 1995, Mirabile attempted to become distributor for the Gangstar, a Chinese-built sport-utility vehicle that ultimately failed to meet U.S. safety and emissions standards for imports. Apart from being an auto enthusiast, Mirabile was a member of various local organizations, including the Long Beach Yacht Club, California Highway Patrol Foundation and the Long Beach Police Motor Patrol Association., 562-499-1258 ...
