Trish Long: Cavalryman statue a tribute to an El Paso businessman - El Paso Times

Sat, Dec 10, 2011
Pittsburgh, Pa., for burial. It will be accompanied by his brother, William Henderson, of Aurora, Ill. Mr. Henderson is also survived by a sister, Mrs. E.F. Eurich, of Montclair, N.J. The Cavalryman statue, dedicated March 28, 1941, stands Downtown on a triangle of land formed by Missouri, Santa Fe and Prospect streets. Irving Schwartz, Tom Lea Jr. and Percy McGhee were appointed to decide the specifics. "The committee decided on the U.S. Cavalryman, maintaining that individual, who has played a highly important part in pioneer settling of this country, as well as in warfare, had never been immortalized in stone, so far as they knew, and it was time this be done," a 1940, El Paso Times article states. Artist Jose Ruiz de Rivera carved the Cavalryman from a solid block of black Pennsylvania granite. Maj. Gen. H.J. Brees, commander of the Eight Corps Area, flew from San Antonio for the dedication, which also included a letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It said, the statue "should inspire all who view it with a determination to preserve the heritage which is theirs through the sacrifices of their forbearers." Trish Long is the El Paso Times' Archivist and spends her time in the morgue, where the newspaper keeps its old clippings and photos. She shares some of this history in her blog, Tales from the Morgue.
