Randy Galloway: Unlike Oklahoma City, Dallas-Fort Worth pros ... - Sacramento Bee

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
City Thunder that might be of local interest. What happened? How could a championship series that began with so much intrigue and entertainment end with the Thunder, the Vegas favorite to beat Miami, departing in a Game 5 whimper after also caving in Games 2, 3 and 4? It's called the "Not Enough Suffering Theory". Everybody's talking about it. The Thunder blew into Oklahoma City four years ago, a franchise hijacked from Seattle, and had a 23-win season the first season, although the talent base of youth was already eye-catching. And then came a dramatic rise, including the conference finals against the Mavs a year ago, and this spring followed with a postseason wipeout of the Mavs, Lakers and Spurs to reach the ultimate series. But to win it all, the theory goes, it's better to be a club that has previously suffered bitter defeat and humiliation, and had to deal with the cruel public fallout. This is now considered the rebound route to a championship. See Miami last week as an NBA example. The Giants hadn't won an NFL playoff game since the Super Bowl of the 2007 season, when they, yes, won the latest Super Bowl despite a 9-7 regular-season record and a squeeze to even get to the playoffs. The St. Louis Cardinals, a wild-card qualifier in 2011, hadn't made a postseason p...

Commentary: The view from Akron on LeBron James title - Sacramento Bee

Mon, Jun 25, 2012
Cleveland, and he insisted that he didn't take any shortcuts to this championship. Then the seventh question sent James' way in the early hours of Friday morning inside AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami was about us. "This question isn't intended to bait you or intended as some negative question," the reporter began, "but what would you say to the Cleveland fans tonight that wanted to share this moment with you, wanted to win this championship with you? What words would you offer them?" It's a fair question, asked delicately, to which thousands of people in Northeast Ohio would love to know the answer. Only he didn't really answer it. "I'm sitting here as a member of...

Watching the Cubs in Arizona - Canton Daily Ledger

Sun, Apr 1, 2012
I am so going to enjoy watching Ramirez strike out with the bases loaded or seeing Zambrano go ballistic in the dugout in Miami and know that they aren't Cubs anymore. Now if Soriano would just be traded to Baltimore to be their designated hitter, my dream would come true.

Former Peabody phenom pitcher Jeff Allison has message to share on the price ... - Boston.com

Sun, Mar 25, 2012
Usually at this time of year, Jeff Allison is in Florida working on his delivery, his arm slot, his pitching mechanics. As spring arrives, the No. 1 pick - 16th overall - of the Florida (now Miami) Marlins in 2003 is living in Beverly, not far from where the fireballer was a phenom at Peabody Veterans Memorial High School. Allison and the Marlins ended their long, tumultuous association when he was not re-signed last fall. Allison, now 27, recently revealed he had injured his elbow during the 2010 season, slowing his trademark fastball. While he works to rehabilitate his arm, prep...

Could Kansas State's Martin top USC's list as Horn's replacement? - Greenville News

Sun, Mar 25, 2012
That translates to the $2 million range, but buying out Marshall might be an unreasonable expenditure. To me, the next coach should be Martin, son of Cuban immigrants from Miami who was an assistant at Cincinnati to Coach Bob Huggins, followed him to Kansas State and then took over when Huggins left for West Virginia. (Page 2 of 3) Just now, Martin may not be on the best of terms with his athletic director and an opportunity at a place like South Carolina where he could have a realistic shot at becoming the dominant program in the state might be appealing. Where he is now, Kansas will always be No. 1 and he has Marshall and Wichita State, among others nipping at his heels. More on that in a bit, but what about Smart, the former Clemson assistant to Oliver Purnell a few years back? Smart took an assistant’s job at Florida and then, with the support of Florida Coach Billy Donovan, was named head coach at Virginia Commonwealth where he has taken the team to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Smart has become the darling of big-time programs looking for the next coach on the rise. He turned down good jobs last year and just recently rebuffed an overture from Illinois, one of best jobs in the Big Ten and probably one of the top 20 or so jobs in the nation. Would Smart consider South Carolina? Maybe, but not having seen firsthand the Svengali powers of Hyman, the more likely presumption is that Smart likes it where he is, wants to continue to plot his own course and build the program. Which brings us back to Martin, whose presence would agitate every one of the 13 other basketball programs in the Southeastern Conference. Martin would bring a physical, pit bull presence to the SEC that would command attention in a year or two. At Kansas State he was able to do it immediately with the talent left behind, but there isn’t a lot on the shelves in Columbia, surely not as much as there was when Horn replaced Dave Odom. Hyman might balk at Martin because of his association with Curtis Malone, coach of an AAU team in Washington, D.C., but sometimes the appearance of a little risk is nothing more than that – it looks like something could be wrong, but it only ...

Wright given release - Boston.com

Sun, Feb 26, 2012
Colts on Nov. 21, 2010, and did not play again that season. He returned during training camp this year, only to suffer another concussion in the season opener in Miami. Wright was placed on injured reserve Oct. 14, and said that day that he and the Patriots medical staff felt it was best to let his brain heal by shutting him down for the rest of the season. Wright’s base salary for 2012 was set to be $2.315 million, which also likely played a role in his release. Ohrnberger, a fourth-round draft pick in 2009, spent the 2011 season on injured reserve, though the reason he was on IR was never disclosed by the team. He has played five games in his career. Tom Brady released a statement on his Facebook page yesterday, sharing his thoughts o...
