Gordon Wayne Jones - The Coloradoan

Sun, Feb 19, 2012
Mark in 1965. Little did Gordon know that after assignments requiring moves to residential field offices in Dallas, Texas, Champaign, Ill., Kokomo, Ind., back to Dallas, then Aurora, Ill. near Chicago, he would return to his beginnings at the home office in Des Moines in 1972 where he would go on to be a senior vice president in the Residential Mortgage department eventually retiring in 1995. Gordon was devoted to his family and extended family cherishing those relationships. He also cherished the relationships of friends, coworkers, and neighbors. All who knew him have shared the same theme that he "did not know a stranger," and that many always felt they could "come to him for a caring ear." Gordon loved to read, (especially history), tinker on projects around the house, and take care of his home and landscaping. He also enjoyed traveling and researching history in addition to spending time with family and friends both local and afar, and in retirement enjoyed golf. In recent years Gordon met Ruth Fletcher-Jones in Des Moines and they eventually married in 2004 relocating in Fort Collins, Colo. where Ruth's daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren lived, and his son in nearby Denver. In Fort Collins, both Gordon and Ruth joined the Newcomers Group, and enjoyed friends and neighbors, tried new restaurants, and played golf. They frequently traveled to back to Iowa, and visited the southwestern United States. Gordon served as financial officer for their homeowner's association for 5 years. In the past year he savored sharing time with family, friends, and neighbors whether it be in person or through letters and phone calls, or those who stopped through for a visit. Gordon is preceded in death by his mother and father, Marjorie and Clifford, his first wife and mother of his children, Carol, and daughter Cindy. His current wife Ruth Fletcher-Jones, and his son Mark both reside in Ft. Collins. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Allnutt Drake Chapel in Fort Collins. Interment will be at the Gomer Cemetery in Wales, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wales United Presbyterian Church, Wales, Iowa, in care of Allnutt Funeral Serv...

Trish Long: Cavalryman statue a tribute to an El Paso businessman - El Paso Times

Sat, Dec 10, 2011
His body will be shipped this afternoon from the McBean, Simmons and Hartford undertaking establishment, to Pittsburgh, Pa., for burial. It will be accompanied by his brother, William Henderson, of Aurora, Ill. Mr. Henderson is also survived by a sister, Mrs. E.F. Eurich, of Montclair, N.J. The Cavalryman statue, dedicated March 28, 1941, stands Downtown on a triangle of land formed by Missouri, Santa Fe and Prospect streets. Irving Schwartz, Tom Lea Jr. and Percy McGhee were appointed to decide the specifics. "The committee decided on the U.S. Cavalryman, maintaining that individual, who has played a highly important part in pioneer settling of this country, as well as in warfare, had never been immortalized in stone, so far as they knew, and it was time this be done," a 1940, El Paso Times article states. Artist Jose Ruiz de Rivera carved the Cavalryman from a solid block of black Pennsylvania granite. Maj. Gen. H.J. Brees, commander of the Eight Corps Area, flew from San Antonio for the dedication, which also included a letter from President Franklin D. Roosevelt. It said, the statue "should inspire all who view it with a determination to preserve the heritage which is theirs through the sacrifices of their forbearers." Trish Long is the El Paso Times' Archivist and spends her time in the morgue, where the newspaper keeps its old clippings and photos. She shares some of this history in her blog, Tales from the Morgue.
