Men savor food, good company, and ways to serve others - The Virginian-Pilot

Sun, Nov 13, 2011
Booker T. They know of Church Street's glory days, when movie theaters, doctor's offices and other businesses thrived in that black community. They recall how police in present-day Virginia Beach would hassle them while they were driving late at night. "We're the transition group" from segregation to integration, said Ralston McInnis, Class of '58. McInnis holds the floor, urging his buddies to attend an upcoming literacy event at the Norfolk Juvenile Detention Center. "Make sure you can read before you volunteer," he notes, to raucous laughter. But the guys are dead serious about their mission. They've done several community projects, yet they have a special relationship with the juvie home. Lunch Bunch members mentor the incarcerated teens, host meals and helped upgrade the gym. They visit the center several times a year. "(We tell them) they can make a change. It's not too late," said Alfonzo Foreman, a retired social worker who spent 33 years with the city of Norfolk. Earlier this month, the men spoke about responsibility. Nearly 90 percent of the detainees were black in the session I attended. Balmer, the former police officer, grew up in a family of 14. He spoke about never knowing his father, a problem many of the detainees face: "Every boy wants that tie." Still, it's no excuse. "You have to understand he's not there - and to take care of business," Balmer said. The guys have gotten to the point where they attract politicians and city officials. And now, a filmmaker. Glen Mason decided the men's stories needed to be told to a broader audience. "Their lives are so fascinating," he told me. "Traditionally Tuesday," Mason's film about the men, will air at 6 p.m. Nov. 19 at the church hall at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 1000 Holt St., Norfolk. I'll introduce the documentary, which is produced by Right Angle Media Inc. Tickets cost $25. Call Balmer at (917) 741-2926, Robert Thornton at (757) 739-0649, or McInnis at (757) 407-3970. You'll like the men you meet. As I've found out, the Lunch Bunch is something to savor. Roger Chesley, (757) 446-2329, roger.chesley@pilotonline.com, pilotonline.com/chesley ...
